Although most folks are filled with energy after getting past their 1st trimester, there are a few common physical discomforts that emerge as your body continues to support the progression of your pregnancy.
Relaxin
Your hormone relaxin peaks near the end of your 1st trimester and comes with a few ups and downs.
increases flexibility...Hooray
however, this can also make you a bit more susceptible to injuries and sprains
we encourage you to focus on strength & balance
relaxes ligaments in your pelvis which helps widen the cervix and allows your baby to more efficiently descend the birth canal...Super Awesome
however, your blood vessels are also affected by relaxin to accommodate the increase of blood volume during pregnancy which for some people influences their blood pressure as their blood vessels dilate and relax
because of this increase in blood volume during pregnancy and the delicate nature of blood vessels in you nasal passages, nosebleeds & congestion can be common
some dizziness is normal, however if you feel persistent headaches or dizziness, please consult with your medical provider
Progesterone
The rise of progesterone is a major player (10 times higher than normal) during pregnancy, with several benefits and a few drawbacks:
helps uterus grow and suppresses pre-term contractions
relaxes your intestines giving them more time to utilize and absorb nutrients and water
however, this can show up as constipation (all the fluid has had time to be absorbed) which may also lead to hemorrhoids, so hydrate and take lots of short walks to the bathroom. Win Win!
higher levels of progesterone also help prepare your breast tissue for chestfeeding/breastfeeding
