What does a birth doula do?

A birth doula is someone who will be by your side throughout your birth journey. Doulas combine their training on positioning, comfort, advocacy, and their knowledge of both physiological and medical birth with a warm and nurturing presence. What does this look like?

During early labor, your doula may help you identify signs of labor, provide guidance on comfort, positions, breathing and visualization. Together you will create a plan to transition to the birth place.

During active labor, your doula may help normalize and validate emotional and physical changes, provide physical support including positions for laboring, comforting touch, and assistance with non-medical and medical pain relief support and options. Your doula will also assist you with learning about and using medical tools, facilitate communication with your care team, and advocate for your birth preferences.
