What is a Student Doula?
Student Doulas are newly trained birth doulas who receive additional support, training, mentorship, and supervision from DC Birth Doulas. Some of our student doulas are certified and some are not - most training and certifying organizations do not offer certification until doulas have attended their first three births. Student doulas participating in the DCBD Doula Learning Collaborative are part of a 12-week post-training bridging program that includes shadowing and learning directly from our experienced birth doula team.
Potential clients are paired directly with a student-doula based on geography and availability and scheduled for an initial meet and greet to make sure you are a good fit. If you and your doula do not “click” during your meet and greet we can work to pair you with a different student doula.
The Student Doula program supports our regional birth doula work force development needs, allows us to offer birth doula support at a lower price point, and becomes a recruitment pool for our group practice. Parents who would not normally be able to afford a birth doula are able to work with a student doula for a discounted rate while the student doulas receive mentorship, supplemental training, and supervision as they gain experience. It's a win:win:win situation all around!
